Otis Library Asks: Book reviews and best sellers lists are all well and good, but sometimes the best books are those you hear about from word of mouth. With that in mind, the Otis Library asks “What are you reading?” Add their recommendations to your own reading list! Remember to ask at the Information Desk if you need help locating one of these books. Our reader this month is:
Robert A. Geake has been a Rhode Island author and historian for more than thirty years. Mr. Geake recently spoke at Otis Library, where he talked about his book "A History of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island: Keepers of the Bay". While I sadly do not have as much time to settle in with a good book as I would like, two recent reads come to mind as recommendations for those lazy afternoons, or an evening by the woodstove: Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks is a finely wrought novel about a time in Native American and White relations that is little discussed or explored these days. It was a long wait for Charles Frazier's latest novel, but Nightwoods is laced with moments that linger with you, and those equally memorable characters that settle in the backwoods of Frazier's tales. Be forewarned however, this novel is darker and more disturbing than you might expect. ![]() |
